Roger is a part owner and the wine maker of Bass Valley Estate, he is involved in viticulture management and all aspects of wine making. After successfully operating a dairy farm on the estate (155 acre property) he decided to diversify into wine production. He brought a background in retail and agriculture to this venture. His pursuit of winemaking knowledge has led to a scientific winemaking course at Box Hill Tafe in 1991, a wine appraisal course at Burnley Horticulture College in 1993 and an Associate degree in applied science – wine growing and appraisal in 1998, this gave him the knowledge he required to start the immense journey of producing some of Victoria’s best cool climate wines. As the operator of a boutique winery he has the opportunity to experiment and hone his winemaking skills. His efforts have received many wine awards and more importantly the support of the wine drinking public. Roger’s aim is to produce wine of an exceptional local flavour, utlising the grape’s natural seasonal and annual qualities to advantage. This produces tasteful and distinctive wines that express the nature of their unique origin and vintage. Our wines are visually alive, driven by weight of fruit, strength of structure and balance. Often this produces slower drinking wines that satisfy and reward the palate with long lasting and overall enjoyable refreshing mouth feel. In essence a wine that compliments a well prepared and presented meal. A taste that does not compete but shares and refreshes the taste buds in the gustation of fine food and wine. |
